All of us have been impacted during these challenging times and this is especially true for those individuals with disabilities and the organizations that serve them. The non-profit community in Denver South is taking on the challenge by continuing the important work of helping those of us most in need. Here is a glimpse at three of them:

  • The Homebuilders Foundation (HBF) is a Centennial-based non-profit that builds independence for individuals and families with disabilities by modifying their homes to accommodate their disabilities. Because most projects involve in-house improvements, they have put on-hold working in people’s homes and are taking this opportunity to focus on a COVID-19 support campaign, which will help ensure that social distancing now will not lead to continued social isolation. To discover more about the Home Builders Foundation, its mission and to learn about donation and volunteer opportunities visit www.hbfdenver.org.
  • Doctors Care is a non-profit that is dedicated to improving health access for low-income individuals in Denver South through a care clinic, a network of providers, connections to coverage and services to address socioeconomic barriers to health and well-being. They are responding to the pandemic by offering information on ways to stay positive, stay healthy and links to COVID-19 specific resources, including those in Denver South. To learn more, donate and volunteer go to www.doctorscare.org.
  • Special Olympics of Colorado is a non-profit located in Centennial that provides year-round Olympic-type athletic training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. They have cancelled all in-person events until at-least May 31, but they continue their mission by offering a Virtual Training and Exercise Library, promoting the Fit 5 Plan and Tracker Program and holding a Better Together Virtual Walk on Saturday April 25. Visit their website to learn more about its mission and how to donate and volunteer.

One way to handle the stress of this difficult time is to focus on others and volunteer your time and/or money and resources to your local non-profits.
