The Commuter Survey is an annual feature at Denver South. It collects critical information for regional decision-makers, so we sat down with Evan Gatseos, Transportation Outreach Manager at Denver South to better understand what the survey is for and what happens to the results.
What is the purpose of the survey?
Commuter surveys are an important source of information for City governments and other regional organizations. They enable decision-makers to undertake future forecasting for the economic and transportation development of the region. In the survey, we want to capture the behaviors of commuters around Denver South. When it is complete, we provide the information to our regional partners, who use the responses to improve the commuting experience for Denver South workers and residents.
We collect a range of information. We want to know about commute benefits provided by employers and what type of transportation improvements would help make your commute more comfortable in Denver South. We’d like to see what sustainable alternatives commuters are interested in, particularly with regards to public transit, which has been a large investment in recent years.
This year, we’re also trying to understand more about the landscape around commuting and working from home as we recover from the COVID pandemic. We want to see how often people are going back into offices and how they’re getting there.
Why does it happen every year?
A yearly benchmark is critical because everything changes from year to year. Last year, for example, there was an uptick in cycling and interest in cycling compared to the previous year. Obviously, there was also an increase in working from home. How has this changed this year with people starting to go back into offices? Will there be more cycling compared to 2020?
We started the annual survey because we noticed in 2018 that there was a gap for consistent data collection in the Denver South region. Since 2019 we’ve been regularly putting out surveys measuring commuting trends. As the area’s population grows and puts more pressure on the transportation infrastructure, we anticipate changing commuter habits that will be essential to track.
Who should take the survey?
We invite as many people as possible who live and/or work in the Denver South area to take this survey. To obtain an accurate overview of what people are doing, we want as many responses as we can get, from a broad range of people. By participating, you will be helping to improve commuting in Denver South.
